Mahmoud Khattab is an independent photographer and writer based between Cairo, Paris and Bern. Mahmoud’s work spans years of observing change and reminiscence of hills and himself in stills and writings. In his first self-published book, Mahmoud narrates a year as a soldier: venturing into the desert with a dog and an individuality stripped. Finding salvation in the poetry and visual; an autoethnography. The Dog Sat Where We Parted is the winner of Kraszna-Krausz 2025 Photography Book Award and was shortlisted for Paris Photo-Aperture First Photobook Award. In pursuit of tracings, Mahmoud has focused on working on and with valleys, both alive and disappearing. There Was a Valley Here Once traces the disappearing valleys in Cairo’s eastern deserts: a story of chasing a nation’s dream of building new cities in Egypt and how it changed the topographies and nearby ecosystems. It received recognition of Projects Award by Qatar Museums and will debut at the 15th Bamako Biennale in November, 2026.
Mahmoud narrates a Cairo’s past we haven’t seen through stories of love that transcended centuries. In A Poet Never Born, a story that intimately narrates two characters who lived 600 years apart, he writes poetry to imagine sceneries of Omar Ibnul Farid and Jamila Fazail meeting over, and over.

Artist Statement
I believe in photography as a warm, personal medium to serve a purpose; a story, a visual archive of our lifetime. My self taught practice lets me explore my stories in freedom with a patient discipline. My love for Arabic poetry, especially of Andalusi poets the likes of Lisan Al din Ibnul Khatib, Al Mutamid ibnu Abbad’s tribute to his lover Itemad and others, made me love writing stories and, over the years, strive to make my writings have equal footing with my visuals.Part of my personality that grows within my work is my passion for terrains and visuals of the earths I live by. Whether a desert I venture into as a soldier, a hill that resilient communities take sanctuary in, or a valley I had known so well that disappeared, I mean to portray them as an anchor to the story I tell like foothills of a mountain that’s there to last epochs.

The Dog Sat Where We Parted Self-published, 2024

Order your copy here: A laureate of Polycopies & Co. and Shortlisted in Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award, The Dog Sat Where We Parted is a photography book: a visual narrative of my time in conscription as I ventured into the desert as a soldier with a dog, a head shaved and a camouflage that appealed to sand. Questioning times of following orders and sharing a plate and a story with strangers who dressed and shaved their heads just like me. Through photographs discretely taken together with journal writings, I echoed my solitude as I pay my debt to a country with servitude of my body and time.First edition: 700Photographs, text, illustration and graphic design © Mahmoud Khattab 2024ISBN: 978-3-033-10910-0

News: In its 40th edition, Mahmoud Khattab wins the 2025 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award for The Dog Sat Where We Parted (Self-published). A deeply personal project, Khattab captures the vulnerability and fragility of otherwise unseen military life in Egypt. Shot during his year of Egyptian national service as an army doctor in 2017, it is named after Antar, a stray dog with whom Khattab formed a close bond over five-mile walks across the desert. The photographs are an expression of Khattab’s feelings of intense loneliness as a soldier.

I have been tracing valleys since as long as I remember, both as a kid collecting stones from their banks, or searching for their remains after they perish.

I wanted to see a living one and how they become long admired and feared like a mother.

In my letter to you, I wrote of water caressing stones for epochs at a time to a curve your body would intimately fit in.I show you the ways this valley inspires the feminine and masculine inside of me.A Curve That Warmly Fits Yours is a tracing of Valle Verzasca in the southern Alps in portraits I took of myself and others in its landscapes. I have always been inspired by Bernini’s flesh of marble. For once, I wanted to explore this weight stones intimately on our bodies. Together with tracing the length of an old and revered valley, it felt like a conversation with yet another sculptor, whose words would echo south to a lake and surrounding mountains.

In my last days in uniform, Antar would accompany me wherever I go. He would sleep next to me in my guard shifts and wake me up if I fell asleep. He was a scary one year old to many, a deep loving dog to few of us.

The Dog Sat Where We Parted2018-2020

A PERSONAL project of my one year long path through
service in Egypt. I had to do it. Army service is
obligatory for all eligible men here. I could not travel or work
unless I do my time.

Apart from endless guarding hours, miles of walks everyday,
caring for the ill and tending for the wounded as a doctor, I
spent my year of service on a trail around the country. I spent
most of it in solitude. Suddenly, my aspirations, dreams,
feardoms, even my haircut looked just like everyone else’s. It
was one of the greatest challenges in my life; to be stripped
away of my individuality, to submit and to find comfort in a
stranger’s company who looked and dressed just like me.

My father took us in a car ride to see our
new home. When I stepped out and told him that all I saw was a
desert, he told us how each piece of land will be a house. How each line will be a street.
“A city will grow right here.”

	THERE WAS A VALLEY
HERE
ONCE

2017 - present

This is a search for a disappearing valley that I have been tracing since 2017 in Eastern Desert of Cairo

There Was a Valley Here Once is a reminiscence of how our cities once looked like in
a distant past. Hidden in layers, sometimes history will reveal itself to you as a reminder, and a witness of how fast
millenniums and epochs of slow breaths will change into a memory.

Our relationship with landscapes has evolved. For a long time, they imposed their presence on us and our cultures.
Our histories and folklore music are full of mountains we took refuge in. Hills we built houses on top of. Canyons
we trekked through. Deserts that loomed over ourishing banks of the Nile river. Valleys whose tracks we followed
back home.

What has changed only few decades ago?
What allowed within four years an entire city emerge on top of a valley that once fed a river along its tributaries?
